Interview with Lisa Blette, chef/owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: Cooking has always been my passion, since I was a young girl. I have a special love for pastry work. I have a little one of my own now and wanted to be able to do what I love and still be a stay-at-home mom. It’s been a challenge at times, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. The way I see it, I will have a well-trained partner when my little one gets older.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: What differentiates Vanilla Bean Bakery from other bakeries is that we have vegan and gluten-free options that actually taste good. So many people tell me that they have tried gluten-free/vegan cupcakes, but they taste terrible. Since my business is from home, all orders are delivered, so that offers a convenience that most bakeries don’t have. All of the baked goods from Vanilla Bean Bakery are made from scratch with the best ingredients, local (when available) and with lots of love.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: It’s fun to bake. I’m able to be creative and give people something memorable. The bulk of my business is for special occasions, so it’s nice to contribute something that has a wow factor.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: The size of my kitchen is miniature in comparison to what I’m used to in a professional kitchen.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: People might be surprised that I started my business from the floor up to where I am today while raising a newborn baby.
