Defenseman Tyson Barrie, who scored the game-tying goal that forced overtime in Dallas on Tuesday night, didn’t seem to be suffering any ill-effects afterward as he cheerfully discussed it and also was one of the Avalanche players to speak to the media after Wednesday’s off-ice workouts.
But somewhere along the line, a troublesome flexor became more of an issue and Barrie didn’t suit up against the Red Wings on Thursday night.
Stefan Elliott, his close friend and fellow 2009 Avalanche draft choice, and a stylistically similar player, took his place in the lineup and in the defensive pairing with Nate Guenin. Elliott had been a healthy scratch in the two games since his recall from Lake Erie last week.
Alumni game. The next meeting of the Avalanche and Red Wings in Denver will be Feb. 27, 2016, at Coors Field in the NHL’s Stadium Series.
An alumni game — with details yet to be finalized — will be part of the proceedings, involving former Avs and Wings.
Colorado coach Patrick Roy said Thursday he had one goal for that appearance: “Try to lose a bit of weight to make sure my mask would fit.”
Bison in the building. The PeeWee AA Boulder Bison, winners of the Avalanche-run qualifier for the renowned Quebec International PeeWee Tournament to be played Feb. 11-22 at the Colisee Pepsi in Quebec City, were introduced and on the ice for the national anthem Thursday. The Bison will represent the Avalanche in the tournament.
Familiar faces. Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey still has a home in the Denver area and is an offseason resident, often skating with Avalanche players.
Tony Granato, a former Avalanche head coach and assistant, is in his first season as an assistant with the Red Wings and head coach Mike Babcock.
