I was conducting research on the Broncos’ coordinators when I stumbled upon a story I wrote five years ago on Joe DeCamillis.
He was then the special teams coordinator for the Wade Phillips-coached Dallas Cowboys, who were about to play the Minnesota Vikings in a 2010 second-round NFC playoff game. Phillips was recently hired as the Broncos’ defensive coordinator; DeCamillis as their special teams coordinator.
DeCamillis, who grew up in Arvada, displayed an incredibly high pain threshold and dedication when he coached the Cowboys through the 2009 season despite a severe neck injury suffered when an offseason storm caused the team’s indoor practice bubble to collapse upon him. Even without the injury, he’s quite the story.
