With a simple, “I missed you too,” made his triumphant return to the on Saturday night. This time, Austin was fronting his own new band, rather than , which he parted ways with in 2014 after serving as the group’s mandolinist since 1998.

Austin brought with him an impressive collective of musicians, including Eric Thorin, Ross Martin and the Left Coast’s Danny Barnes. Together, the group’s sound is upbeat, light-hearted bluegrass. It’s a return to the style of his former band, and might even be more friendly and fun. And with his usual assortment of facial expressions and searing mandolin licks, Austin combined with Barnes’ banjo shredding, Thorin’s towering bass grooves and Martin’s engaging guitar skills to create a vibrant night of music. Local band Caribou Mountain Collective opened the show with a lively mix of originals and covers in their own bluegrass style.
