
When all is said and done, a levied against disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong may not hold up.
But regardless of how the legalities play out, it surely reflected the right moral judgment of Armstrong’s actions.
At the core of the dispute are the performance bonuses that SCA Promotions paid Armstrong and Tailwind Sports Corp. during a career in which the cyclist won seven Tour de France titles.
The promotions company accused Armstrong of fraud as allegations about Armstrong’s doping grew louder. Under oath, the cyclist denied using performance-enhancing drugs.
“Perjury must never be profitable,” a Texas arbitration panel wrote earlier this month.
Armstrong’s lawyer has confidently asserted the award conflicts with Texas law and predicted it will be overturned.
Even if the judgment does not stand, the bruising weight of criticism should.
