Wednesday: The Calder Quartet defines what it means to be a small and successful classical music ensemble today. The enterprising foursome have their Mozart and Haydn down, but they also specialize in new works, premiering pieces by the likes of Terry Riley and Christopher Rouse. At the same time, they make their own repertoire happen by commissioning works that suit their particular skills and by teaming with rock-influenced players like The Airborne Toxic Event and So Percussion. The quartet comes to Denver next week as part of the Friends of Chamber 2014-15 series. The program includes string quartets from Britten (No. 2) and Beethoven (No. 14), plus Thomas Adés’ 1994 “Arcadiana.” Newman Center, 2344 E. Iliff Ave. $35. 303-871-7720 or .
