Three horses were killed Thursday morning in a single-vehicle Elbert County crash near Elizabeth, the county’s sheriff’s office said.

The crash happened at about 6 a.m. on Colorado 86 and Cherokee Trail where four horses wandered onto the highway. The driver of the vehicle, who authorities have not identified, was not injured.

The sheriff’s office described the vehicle as a small sedan.

“The surviving horse was taken to a deputy’s barn located close to the accident scene,” the office said.

Officials did not initially know who the horses belonged to but later located the owner.
