The state health insurance exchange signed up 139,652 Coloradans for commercial plans during the three-month open enrollment period that ended Sunday, officials reported Thursday.

Almost 220,000 residents enrolled in private or public plans, including 76,194 in Medicaid and 3,720 in Child Health Plan Plus. Officials’ target enrollment range for 2015 is 174,000 to 220,000 by the end of 2015, Connect for Health Colorado spokesman Curtis Hubbard said.

Of those enrolled in private plans, about 95,000 are renewals and 45,000 are new customers, he said.

Under the Affordable Care Act, the only people who can enroll in private insurance through the state and federal exchanges outside of the open enrollment period are those who experience certain life-changing events, such as getting married, having a baby or losing coverage provided through a job. Medicaid and CHP+ enrollment is year-round.

Connect for Health Colorado officials said they will work with anyone who started but couldn’t complete the sign-up process to enroll them in 2015 coverage.

Connect for Health Colorado also enrolled 24,8444 in dental plans
