There’s a reason why they’re state champions.
After one round at the 2015 Colorado state wrestling tournament, all nine of the returning 2A state champions won their matches via pinfall — in under two minutes.
Holly’s Ryan Nordyke was the fastest, winning his 145-pound match over McClave’s Dayton Garcia in a mere 58 seconds, while Swink’s Blake Denton needed 1:55 to beat Del Norte’s Anthony Medina. On average the defending champs wrestled just more than 1:17.
Class 3A’s returning champs almost did the same. Valley’s Ruben Lucero, Fort Lupton’s Jacob Ornelas, Holy Family’s Joseph Prieto and Sterling’s Joel Contreras all pinned their opponents in less than two minutes. Valley senior Brendan Gonzales won by decision over Alamosa’s Nate Henry 6-1.
