Impressive? Devin Rothrock is impressive.
Arvada West’s 220-pounder has ripped through three rounds of his bracket in the Class 5A portion of the Colorado tournament at the Pepsi Center.
Rothrock, now 29-0, advanced to a second consecutive final with three pins, all in dominating fashion.
In Thursday’s preliminaries, he handled Pine Creek’s Jeremie Medina in 17 seconds. Earlier Friday in the quarterfinals, Fruita Monument’s Chase Clayton was a goner in 1 minute, 3 seconds. And in Friday night’s semifinals, Rothrock earned a fall over Rangeview’s up-and-coming Max Gonzales in 3:19. Gonzales (40-5), just 15 years old, the son of former Rangeview football coach Dave Gonzales and the 2014 offensive player of the year as a running back in the 5A South Metro League, hadn’t been pinned or surrendered back points all season.
The 5A champion at 195 a year ago, when he was 25-2, a chiseled Rothrock will meet Grand Junction’s Tyler Zook (40-4) in the finale.
