It was thought that perhaps Legacy’s Ryan Deakin and Broomfield’s Darek Huff may as well have roomed together.
In an oddity that speaks volumes about the classification system and layout, the two north metropolitan-area competitors almost had to face each other a whopping five times this season. It would have happened in the Class 5A 126-pound final.
However, Huff lost a 4-2 decision in the semifinals in overtime to Poudre’s Jacob Greenwood on Friday.
Earlier this season, Deakin and Huff had faced off in a dual meet between the programs, at tournaments hosted in Fort Collins and Lafayette (Top of the Rockies), and at the Front Range League tournament.
Deakin, a junior, held the upper hand — he won three of the four matches. He is 46-1 in 2014-15. A season ago, he was 45-0 at 113 in winning a state championship.
Huff, a senior, ended 41-6 and ther will be no consolation matches for him — he refused to shake Greenwood’s hand and ran off the mat. To help offset his wretsler’s lack of sportsmanship, Eagles coach Pat DeCamillas promptly pulled Huff from the field.
