A person died Monday in an avalanche outside of the Aspen Mountain boundary, but the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said the body would not be recovered until Tuesday.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, officials were notified shortly before 3 p.m. that two skiers were involved in the snowslide. One of the skiers provided information on their location to rescuers from the sheriff’s office as well as the Aspen Mountain Ski Patrol and Mountain Rescue Aspen.

The Sheriff’s Office said the missing skier was discovered just after 4 p.m. at the bottom of a snow-covered chute at approximately 9,400 feet. The skier was pronounced dead at about 5 p.m.

In part because of the need to mitigate on-going avalanche danger, officials said the body would not be recovered before Tuesday morning. The identity of the skier was not released, pending notification of the family. The cause and manner of death is to be determined by the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.

Aspen Mountain received six inches of snow overnight Sunday, and 12 inches over the weekend.
