Interview with Rhandy Scrivner, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I began working for a do-it-yourself frame shop at 18 years old and I loved it. I started this business when I was 24 with a partner named Mary Tilp. She retired after our fifth year. I have been the sole owner since then.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: We have a small store feel. We are friendly and helpful to everyone who comes in, whether they are shopping for a gift or framing their treasured art. We have 35-plus years of experience in framing, and thousands of frame and mat choices for their art. We assist our customers every step of the way. Our gift store features many local artisans. The gift store features pottery, jewelry, metal art, candles, scarves and so many more American-made crafts. They range in price from under $5 to $300. Many of the items are one of a kind. We also feature local water colorist Joe Beckner.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: The creativity. Our job never gets boring. We constantly have new projects that require an artistic eye. The gift store keeps us on our toes. We are constantly searching for new artists in addition to our tried and true standbys. The creativity again comes into play as we get to change our displays to keep them interesting and appealing. We also love our customers and their stories. Many of our customers have been loyal to us for 30 years.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Keeping it fresh and affordable.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: That we have been here for 30 years. They are very surprised at our competitive prices, both framing and items in the gift store.
