A man who last April assaulted a deputy, stole his vehicle and led authorities on a high-speed chase through Adams County was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison.
Bernard Jesse Martinez, 32, pleaded guilty last month to attempted aggravated robbery and two counts of second-degree assault on a peace officer. A judge sentenced Martinez to the maximum term.
The county district attorney’s office said Martinez took off in a deputy’s vehicle after authorities were called to a disturbance and found Martinez waving his arms and acting erratically.
“Martinez began struggling with the deputy as he attempted to take him into custody,” the office said in a news release. “Then he jumped into the patrol car and took off, leading officers on a high-speed chase that reached 100 miles per hour on Sheridan Boulevard.”
after he was T-boned at an intersection by a State Patrol car as Martinez sped through the intersection and ran a red light.
Authorities say Martinez also fought with deputies at the county jail.
