The number of candidates for the position of Colorado State athletic director has been reduced by one with the departure of CSU interim athletic director John Morris.

Tufts University in Massachusetts announced Friday the hiring of Morris as athletic director of the Division III program.

Morris had served as Colorado State’s interim athletic director since August, . Morris was on CSU’s staff as Graham’s deputy athletic director since arriving in Fort Collins in 2012after leaving a position in the athletics department at the University of Washington.

Morris was instrumental in the December . Bobo, formerly offensive coordinator at Georgia and a record-setting Georgia quarterback during his playing career, was chosen from a pool of at least a dozen candidates, with each being interviewed by Morris at various locations around the country.

Morris had expressed interest in becoming Colorado State’s permanent athletic director and was considered a top candidate. In a news release from the school, CSU president Tony Frank said he “encouraged (Morris) to stay in the candidate pool” for the A.D position. He called Morris “a rock solid performer.”

“My family and I are very excited about the terrific opportunity that awaits us at Tufts University,” Morris said in a statement. “At the same time, it has been an honor to serve at this world-class university.

“I will always cherish my time at CSU,” Morris continued. “I am grateful I was able to share a few years with a group of extremely talented and dedicated coaches and staff, who are passionate about developing and educating young people and providing them with the best possible student-athlete experience. I also will miss the incredible Ram student-athletes, who inspire me daily and remind me how lucky I am to do what I do.”

Colorado State announced that Morris will remain at CSU “at least into spring” to aid in the school’s transition to a new athletic director.
