Two heavyweights took hits in the Class 4A Sweet 16 on Saturday.
Holy Family, the defending 3A champion and a No. 1 seed, went down to Pueblo South by 72-59 and Denver South, which was runnerup a year ago, was handled by Lewis-Palmer 58-48.
Pueblo South, now 19-6, outscored Holy Family 33-17 in the middle quarters and shot a blistering 27-of-30 at the free throw line. Maleek Jackson and Trey Parker each scored 15 points for the Colts. Jared Baros added 14 and Isiah Pannuzio had 10.
Junior Chris Helbig scored 27 for the Tigers, who finished 20-5.
Lewis-Palmer, now 18-7, ran away early from Denver South. The Rangers ran to an 18-9 first-quarter lead and the Rebels (17-8) never recovered.
Elsewhere, Longmont, a No. 1 seed and a sparkling 25-0, motored past Windsor 67-45. Justinian Jessup scored 23 points, grabbed nine rebounds and added five assists. Windsor trailed 29-18 at half.
Jefferson County’s Golden bolted to 22-3 after winning a close one, 69-65 over the city’s Thomas Jefferson. The Demons enjoyed terrific balance — Ryan Thistlewood led the way with 18 points. Ryan Blodget added 16, Jason Johsnon 13 and Kayden Sund 12. Josh McNair (18) and Jalen Rose (17) led TJ.
Air Academy (21-4) beat Pueblo Central 64-54.
Khameron Davis had 20 points to propel Valor Christian past Sand Creek 75-60. The Eagles are 20-5.
Sierra, now 22-3, ran to a 32-20 halftime lead in taking out Falcon 60-44.
And D’Evelyn, in taking a dominant 23-4 lead in the first quarter, punished Mitchell 64-47. The Jaguars (17-8) were led by Charlie Davis (19 points), Grant Witherspoon (16) and Cameron brown (14).
