Interview with Kevin Fullmer, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: After Graduating from the University of Northern Iowa, I decided to relocate to Colorado. I landed at Color Tile in 1980. Two years later, I purchased Floor Co. from an ex-Color Tile store manager. In 1995, I joined Abbey Carpet and changed the name to Abbey Carpet & Tile.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Abbey Carpet is a group of 850 independently owned floor covering specialty stores. With our tremendous buying power, we are able to competitively price all of our products. Being a small, family-owned business, we can out-service all of our competition. We know who is going to install your flooring and what time they will arrive at your home. With the many different products on the market, it is important that you get flooring that will give you the performance you expect.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: Making homes look brand new again is the most rewarding part of my job.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: All the bad product and installation information that our customers pick up before they come to us is our biggest challenge.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: I have two salespeople. Don Schroeder is my wife’s nephew. He grew up in the same little town in Iowa that I grew up in. He has been with me for 25 years and loves to put elk down. Jared Prewitt is my son-in-law. He has a business degree from the University of Phoenix and was a proud member of the United States Marines.
