A Jefferson County elementary school was evacuated Thursday afternoon and classes cancelled after a suspicious odor was reported there.
Bear Creek K-8 students and staff were moved to Bear Creek Evangelical Presbyterian Church as fire crews investigated the odor. At 12:45 p.m., the county school district announced that parents were to pick up their kids at the church, located at 3101 S. Kipling St.
Three teachers and 34 students reported feeling ill and were evaluated and released.
“We did declare the school safe,” said Gary Armstrong, a spokesman for West Metro Fire Rescue.
Armstrong said fire crews believe air in the building was not circulating properly which possibly led to the odor. No one was transported to the hospital, he said.
Armstrong said fire crews were initially called out to the school on reports of a possible natural gas leak.
