A 30-year-old man faces several possible charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide, after police say he drunkenly killed two people in a three-vehicle crash early Tuesday.

Police say the man, whose identity authorities have not released, is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and “excessive” speeding.

The crash happened at about 2 a.m. near the intersection of Tower Road and East 22nd Avenue. Police say the man was driving a GMC Denali northbound on Tower Road when he rear-ended a small Ford sedan before crossing into oncoming traffic and slamming into a Ford pickup truck.

The GMC rotated several times before it came to rest, according to Sgt. William Revelle.

The crash left the drivers of the sedan, a 45-year-old woman, and the pickup truck, a 60-year-old man, dead, police said.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Authorities have not released the identities of either driver.

The man driving the GMC was taken to a hospital with injuries that are believed to be non-life threatening, according to police.

Revelle say the driver of the GMC was intoxicated. He declined to elaborate, saying only “everything we had on scene led us to believe that.”

“He was actually stuck in the car,” Revelle said of the man driving the Denali. “Some of the first people on the scene had to get him out of the car. None of the doors would open.”

Police believe the woman killed in the crash was following her boyfriend home when she was fatally struck by the GMC.

Investigators say the woman, her boyfriend and the driver of the GMC had all been at a nearby bar before the collision.

Charges against the man driving the GMC are pending, Revelle said.

“We’re still doing our investigation,” he said.

Images from the scene showed three badly mangled vehicles scattered along a stretch of Tower Road, emergency responders milling about.
