Without much on the free agent market for tight ends, and with Julius Thomas all but out the door at Dove Valley to the Jacksonville Jaguars with NFL free agency in full swing, the Broncos really had no choice but to grab tight end Virgil Green, especially with other teams chasing him.

“I think the Broncos came up (in money) quite a bit because John Fox and Adam Gase were after him,” Denver Post Broncos writer Mike Klis told The Sports Show with Woody Paige and Les Shapiro on Tuesday. “It’s always good to have multiple suitors.”

Veteran tight end Owen Daniels — who has played every snap with now-Broncos coach Gary Kubiak — . He will arrive in Denver Tuesday night and visit the organization on Wednesday, Klis said.

SIGN UP:

“This offense is not going to be the split-’em-out, spread … three-receiver, four-receiver, five-receiver sets they had in the past,” Klis said. “It’s going to be one tight ends, two tight-ends that are going to run the ball, that are going to play-action off the run. It’s going to be more that pro-style, West Coast-style offense. You need a serviceable tight end, not necessarily a great tight end like Julius Thomas. At least that’s what the Broncos are telling me.”

The moves, at the very least, should help the Broncos up front.

“What makes those guys (Green and Daniels) good guys is the zone blocking scheme — they’ll be able to help the offensive line. And that’s really where the Broncos need to improve. Now the Broncos have two tight ends that know what they’re doing as far as run-blocking.”
