A 29-year-old, legally blind man is in serious condition after a vehicle struck him as he crossed an intersection against the traffic light, Aurora police said Thursday.

Police say the man was intoxicated.

The man, whom police have not identified, was in surgery at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, and it wasn’t known if he would survive, according to a news release.

He was crossing South Havana Street at East Mississippi Avenue when the light for advancing traffic was green.

“He was crossing the intersection on foot, from the southwest corner to the northeast corner, ignoring the signal lights,” the release said.

A 67-year-old woman driving a Jeep north on Havana had the green light. She struck him in the intersection.

“Contributing factors of this crash are that the …. male was intoxicated (alcohol), legally blind and crossing the intersection against the signal lights and not walking in the designated crosswalk. Rain and wet road conditions were also factors.”
