A week after leading Denver East to the 5A boys state basketball semifinal, Angels senior Brian Carey was announced Friday as the Gatorade Colorado boys basketball player of the year.

He is the second straight Angels player to receive the honor, joining Colorado Buffaloes freshman Dominique Collier, who won it last season.

Carey averaged 24.5 points, 7.8 assists and 2.6 steals to lead East to a 17-11 record in the 2014-15 season. On top of that, he also has a 3.32 grade-point average and spends time volunteering as a youth basketball instructor, as well as with the Special Olympics and the Big Brothers Big Sisters and America, among other things.

“I have had the pleasure of coaching Brian during Denver East’s state championship season and coached against him the years prior to the state championship,” Grandview coach Michael Rogers said in a release. “He has always carried himself in a manner that any parent, teacher and coach would be proud of.”
