Cherry Creek School District will use a new calendar for the 2015-16 school year that will see students start classes earlier and break for summer before Memorial Day.

Schools that observe the district’s traditional calendar will get underway Thursday, Aug. 13 this fall and end the year on Friday, May 27, 2016, before Memorial Day weekend, according to a

Traditional-calendar schools , this school year, and will let out on Tuesday, June 2.

Schools on the transitional calendar will start Aug. 5 and end on June 3, 2016; those on the four-track plan will begin July 7 and end on June 17, 2016.

The change was approved by the Cherry Creek Schools Board of Education in 2013 following a survey of 5,000 students, parents and district staff. Seventy-eight percent of all respondents strongly supported the adjustment, the district said.

The adjustment will allow high school students to complete their fall semester finals before winter break, rather than upon their return in January, according to the district.

Supporters say the change will also better align the district schedule with that of surrounding districts and most colleges.

“Our Board of Education members listened to our community and adjusted our school calendar to better meet the needs of students and families,” Harry Bull, Cherry Creek Schools superintendent, said in the news release. “We look forward to the positive changes the new calendar will bring to our schools in the 15-16 school year.”
