Rockies pitcher David Hale was bumped from his scheduled Cactus League start Thursday because of a strained oblique muscle, Colorado manager Walt Weiss said. And it may affect the Rockies’ competition for a rotation spot.

in spring training with a strained left groin. And Jhoulys Chacin was released Sunday from the roster.

That leaves three starters (Kyle Kendrick, Tyler Matzek and Jordan Lyles) and one or two spots to fill.

Hale was among the front-runners for that spot. But an oblique strain, similiar the one that has set infielder Daniel Descalso back nearly two weeks, could push Hale down the list.

Weiss said the Rockies will be cautious with Hale, but he remains in the mix of competition.

Hale arrived with the Rockies by trade from Atlanta in the offseason.
