The U.S. Air Force Academy is investigating the death of a cadet.
A cadet was found Thursday afternoon in his dorm room in Sijan Hall with injuries.
Officials originally said he was taken to a local hospital, but later said he died before being airlifted. He was pronounced dead at 3:43 p.m. by the El Paso County Coroner, according to a statement from the academy.
The nature of the injuries was not released.
The academy will not release the cadet’s name until 24 hours after his relatives have been notified.
In the statement, Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson, the academy superintendent, was quoted as saying, “The Academy family is deeply saddened by the death of one of our own. Our heart-felt condolences go out to the family and friends of the cadet. Our Air Force family is grieving this loss, and we are committed to helping the family through this extremely difficult time.”
John Van Winkle, an academy spokesman, told the Colorado Springs Gazette the school had canceled evening activities and was trying to determine the whereabouts of all 4,000 cadets on the campus.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
