classical music Philharmonic takes on Duke Ellington

tonight. Tonight’s concert by the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra takes a jazzy turn, with Duke Ellington’s “Three Black Kings.” Ellington wrote the piece late in his composing career. It references three regal leaders who made their mark over time and distance: King of the Magi, King Solomon and Martin Luther King. Respected saxophonist Peter Sommer solos. The varied program also includes John Williams’ “Escapades,” from “Catch Me if You Can,” and Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 “Reformation.” The Denver Phil is one of the best deals in town: Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students.
