Tax it! This video, “UFO over the Rocky Mountains!” made the rounds in 2008, but turned out to be the handiwork of the two sons of author and former Denver Post writer Mark Obmascik.
While Colorado senators were in session bickering over the state budget Wednesday afternoon, their witty mates in the House were having some seasonal fun.
An afternoon press release the House Democrats expressed “shock” that senators inadvertently killed the state’s spending bill because they mistook it for a flying-saucer bill.
House Speaker Dickey Lee Hullinghorst of Boulder, Rep. Millie Hamner of Dillon and former House Speaker Mark Ferrandino were in on the gag.
The ball’s in your court now, Senate President Bill Cadman.
Here is the press release in full:
Today the Senate heard the state budget or the “Long Bill” as itap known in the Capitol and killed it when they mistook the bill as an attempt to create specialty license plates for Unidentified Flying Objects.
“I’ve never had a particularly high regard for the lower chamber across the Capitol,” said Speaker Dickey Lee Hullinghorst, D-Boulder. “But seriously, even I am shocked that they somehow got confused and killed the state budget.”
“I was here for eight years and never once did we kill a license plate bill, despite my best efforts,” former Speaker Mark Ferrandino said. “Unfortunately when someone finally steps up to kill one, turns out itap the state budget. Only the Senate could manage to mess that up.”
“After six months of negotiations, I am devastated the Senate killed the Long Bill,” said Rep. Millie Hamner, vice chairwoman of the JBC. “I was worried the Long Bill might be in trouble when Sen. Steadman raised concerns about continuing state funding for the non-planetary resident holding facility permanent fund.”
Happy April Fools!
