COLORADO SPRINGS — Authorities say an elderly Colorado Springs man suspected of setting his home on fire shot himself before first responders were able to get to him.
An autopsy released Wednesday says 80-year-old Peter Spellman died of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head March 5.
The report also confirmed initial police reports that a man had called 911 to say he had a shotgun and was going to burn down the house and kill himself.
Several nearby homes were evacuated.
Siblings of Spellman’s late wife say he was a bit eccentric but was a good man who was nothing but caring to their sister during their long marriage.
The Gazette reported Spellman was to be evicted from his home.
