AURORA, Colo. (AP) — A total of 39 vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, were involved in the pileup that shut down U.S. Highway 36 near Boulder.
Photos from the Daily Camera showed a car pushed under the truck and drivers standing by their dented cars Friday morning.
The crashes were among several that shut down highways in the Denver and Colorado Springs areas as icy roadways caught drivers by surprise following a light spring snowfall.
In Aurora, one person died after being thrown from a vehicle that lost control and rolled on icy Interstate 225, striking a passing bus empty but for its driver. The driver wasn’t hurt.
Roads were snowy in the mountains, where Interstate 70 was closed for about 1 ½ hours after several trucks spun out on Vail Pass.
