Northbound traffic is diverted off of Interstate 25 at 144th Avenue in Thornton after a traffic accident closed the highway in both directions last Wednesday. (Helen H. Richardson, The Denver Post)
Re: “I-25 in Thornton open in both directions after nearly 5 hours,” April 1 news story.
At what point will our public officials realize that one traffic accident cannot be allowed to immobilize tens of thousands of drivers, costing untold money in lost work time, and adding significantly to the air pollution that is already a problem for all of us? Not to mention more road rage. Yes, itap a sad thing when folks are injured or killed in a mishap, and yes, it takes some time to clear a road of damaged vehicles and debris — but certainly not hours.
We have plenty of emergency equipment and troopers deployed on our very limited highways along the Front Range. They can complete their investigations and supervise the clean-up very efficiently. It simply makes no sense that these frequent massive back-ups exacerbate our already overloaded roads. Take the injured to the hospital, and tow the vehicles off the road. How difficult is that?
