A pedestrian was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday evening after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Aurora, police said.

Aurora police said they have a possible suspect in the case, which occurred at about 7 p.m. on East Colfax Avenue and Kingston Street. After striking an unidentified male who was crossing Colfax from a center median, officials said the vehicle, described as a silver BMW, fled the scene.

Police said the car was recovered a short time later in the area of East Seventh Avenue and Moline Street. Afterwards, the registered owner of the BMW called Aurora police reporting that the vehicle was stolen earlier in the evening.

Officials said investigators are questioning the registered owner.

Aurora police Lt. Michael McClelland said initial investigations indicated that “the pedestrian may have been the proximate cause of the crash.”
