Bicyclists ride through downtown Denver on March 10, 2014. (Cyrus McCrimmon, Denver Post file)

Re: “More bike lanes? OK, but bicyclists need to obey traffic laws,” April 8 letter to the editor.

Letter-writer Jon Weimer complains that bicyclists do not follow all traffic rules, as the law requires.

A cyclistap primary concern is to keep himself or herself safe. In most cases, observing traffic rules supports that objective. But if a cyclist runs an otherwise clear four-way stop sign intended to discourage drivers of 4,000-pound vehicles from speeding through residential neighborhoods, it hardly jeopardizes his or her safety or that of anyone else.

And when legal absolutists like Weimer have to leave their vehicle to push the walk button in order to change the stop light to green, I will agree that all traffic laws should absolutely apply to cyclists.

I am all for providing road access to bicyclists just as much as the next guy. Lord knows, I grew up riding a bicycle everywhere I went. What I am against, though, are those bikers who blatantly disregard the laws of the road and the obvious non-enforcement of those laws by the Denver police when it comes to bicyclists. Has anyone out there ever witnessed a bicyclist receiving a ticket for a road violation? Denver should install, under the signs that say “Share the Road,” signs that say “Share the Law.”
