Classical music: A familiar CSO face steps out front
Tonight-Sunday The Colorado Symphony Orchestra has gotten into the habit lately of tapping its own players for the sort of solo parts usually handed over to touring, celebrity musicians. It saves the orchestra money and allows some of its in-house musicians to take the spotlight on difficult works. This weekend, concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams steps out of her chair for Beethoven’s “Violin Concerto in D major,” considered one of the most important pieces in the violin repertoire. Also on the program: Haydn’s Symphony No. 1 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1. Cristian Macelaru, assistant conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra is on the podium. 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. 1 p.m. Sunday, Boettcher Concert Hall, Denver Performing Arts Complex. $25-$89. 303-623-7876 or .
