FORT COLLINS — Police in Fort Collins said a transient destroyed an iconic 10-foot fiberglass horse, trying to take a ride after too many drinks.
The $4,000 “Caballo de Colorado” sculpture sat for seven years in Old Town Square near CooperSmith’s Pub & Brewery Co.
“I see him kind of like leaning on it,” said Zachary Davis, a CooperSmith’s employee.
“All of a sudden, I hear a big hollow crash, and it hits the ground. And the horse is on the ground, and he’s trying to stand up. And almost immediately police were there.”
Police said the man, 44-year-old Wesley White, was arrested and faces a criminal-mischief charge.
The horse, one of seven around the city, was commissioned by the Fort Collins Downtown Development Authority and painted by local artist Amy Brackenbury.
“I was crushed,” Brackenbury said. “It took weeks.”
The executive director of the DDA said the sculpture was insured and the DDA could get the full $4,000 for a new piece of art.
