Baltimore has had a rough week. But thanks to the quick action of State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby, it now appears that juries may determine whether six police officers she has charged with crimes were responsible for the death of Freddie Gray while he was in their custody.
The case she described sounds compelling, with the officers allegedly ignoring Gray’s pleas for medical help and failing to restrain him with a seat-belt while he was handcuffed, shackled and careening around the city in a police wagon. But of course Mosby presented only the prosecution’s side. The officers will have their day in court. And it’s important to remember that the police version of events, even in a case of great public controversy, may turn out to be closer to the truth.
That was certainly the case in Ferguson, Mo.
If the officers are convicted, it will provide a jarring wake-up call for a department that clearly has had its problems. But it won’t vindicate the rioters and looters who trashed parts of Baltimore this week. Those who were arrested deserve serious charges, too.
