Fine Homebuilding is pretty deep into niche territory, and written mainly for architects and custom builders. But if you’re pondering voluntary simplicity and smaller, more manageable living, the Spring/Summer issue’s story, “The Big Deal About Tiny Houses,” is worth a read.
It explores and depicts the tiny house of an Oregon family that lives on five acres, but more importantly, the reasons they do so: connectivity, scale, time and creativity. There’s also an update on the work of the American Tiny House Association, formed to work with local governments to modify existing zoning and code regulations that thwart smaller dwellings ().
The menu of articles with other Colorado applications is wide-ranging: Low-tech solar; small cabins; and an under-2,000 square foot home on Orcas Island, Wash., that’s the 2015 Editor’s Choice winner. And the “Through the Lens” feature will fill your mind with thoughtful inspiration for uncluttered, liveable interiors. Check out the soaring bookcases and built-ins in particular. The issue hits stands in early May. — Susan Clotfelter, The Denver Post
