Mastodon, Fillmore Auditorium, April 24
Metal behemoths Mastodon are possibly the last band to achieve mythic status in the genre. That it released the mid-oughts albums “Crack the Skye” and “Blood Mountain” for a major label was impressive enough; but when the albums gained status as modern classics, the Atlanta-born four piece earned a spot on a short list of bands that are still pioneering the genre into exciting territory. “Emperor of Sand,” its seventh album, is in many ways a departure, with wildly melodic songs and a conceptual conceit grounded in sobering reality: the onset of cancer. The heyday of emo-acoustic music revolved around the label mates at Saddle Creek, an Omaha-based record company that saw the likes of Bright Eyes and Cursive sing their voices ragged with the concerns of the sensitive twenty-something in the harsh, modern world. Fast forward a decade later, and those singer-songwriters’ concerns have domesticated, even if their outlooks are just as bleak. Take Cursive’s Tim Kasher, for example, whose third solo album “No Resolutions” tears the house of adult life down brick by brick.
