Police in Cañon City arrested a 49-year-old man Monday who they say threw several knives at officers, barely missing them, during an apparent suicidal episode.
Roy Mondragon was shot by “less lethal rounds” and tased before he was taken into custody, police said in a news release.
Officers were called to his home on the 1000 block of Sherman Avenue at about 7 a.m. on reports of a suicidal man armed with knives and threatening to blow up his house.
“Officers quickly learned that Mondragon’s suicidal episode stemmed from an earlier domestic situation involving his wife,” the release said. “Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, at which time Mondragon threw a knife at an officer just missing him.”
Mondragon then barricaded himself inside his house, rushing out several times to throw more knives at officers, police say.
Officers fired less lethal shotgun rounds and used a Taser to subdue Mondragon, police say, eventually taking him into custody.
No officers were injured in the encounter. Mondragon was evaluated by medical personnel and taken to a hospital where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries, the release said.
Police say their investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
Authorities say they were able to remove two children, 8 and 10 years old, who live at the home before they confronted Mondragon.
