MONTROSE, Colo. (AP) — Firefighters say a blaze that destroyed an apartment building and displaced 13 residents probably started from a charcoal grill on the deck.

The Montrose Press reports (http://bit.ly/1bveC3S ) that all residents escaped the building after a smoke alarm went off during the Sunday fire.

Montrose Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Allen Weese says the fire was reported just after midnight Sunday and witnesses say the fire seemed to be concentrated on the deck, where a charcoal grill had been used the evening before.

He says the grill may have had an open vent on the bottom that dropped hot coals onto the deck.

Weese says no one was hurt even though the fire was significant.

The Red Cross is helping the families who lived in the 7,600-square-foot building.
