Ben Carson greets supporters after announcing his candidacy for president Monday in Detroit. (Paul Sancya, The Associated Press)

Ben Carson’s announcement that he is running for president presents an opportunity to America we have rarely had: to elect a president from outside the world of politics who is more concerned about our country than his own political aspirations. Carson, a brilliant surgeon, also provides the GOP something that no other candidate has to offer. He can broaden the base of the party while remaining true to conservative principles.

Carson grew up in the ghetto and could easily have spent his productive years in prison or even lost his life. He learned the keys to getting out of poverty were personal responsibility and education. Carson will surround himself with the best, make tough decisions and lead us out of our current walk on the edge of the abyss.

I’m a bit baffled and find it odd that the Democratic Party would not require its nominee to actually be a member of the party. It is clear that socialist independent Bernie Sanders has no intention of joining the Democratic Party in spite of campaigning for its nomination.

Ben Carson, an independent, registered as a Republican in anticipation of his run for the Republican nomination. My guess is that the pseudo-run by Sen. Sanders is perhaps to take the notion of the inevitability of a Hillary Clinton nomination off the table.
