BOULDER — Austin Holford, one of two teenagers who pleaded guilty to fatally beating a developmentally disabled man while trying to steal his Xbox, was sentenced Wednesday to a total of 56 years in prison.
Holford, 19, had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, first-degree assault on an at-risk victim and two counts of aggravated burglary in February. The sentencing range was 48 to 70 years.
Boulder District Judge Patrick Butler ultimately gave Holford the sentence along with five years of parole, a balancing act between punishing Holford as well as giving him a chance at rehabilitation.
“Only Mr. Holford will determine what will happen to him while he is in incarceration,” Butler said.
