ASPEN — Independence Pass, the highest paved pass in Colorado, may open early as the Colorado Department of Transportation works to clear snow from the roads.

CDOT spokeswoman Tracy Truelove said that snow is nearly cleared off the road, which is typically closed from November to Memorial Day.

Plows from Aspen have reached the 12,094-foot summit.

The road is set to open May 21, but even with all the snow plowed there is still work to do, such as filling potholes, straightening signs and assessing and mitigating avalanche risks.

As the work progresses, CDOT will consider opening the pass early.
