A Denver man was sentenced Thursday to 24 years in prison after shooting another man in a botched marijuana buy in 2013.
Angelo Manuel Renfrow, 24, pleaded guilty in February to attempted murder and aggravated robbery. According to 1st Judicial District Attorney Peter Weir’s office, Renfrow drove to Lakewood on Nov. 13, 2013, to buy $5,400 of marijuana from 24-year-old Steven Jaco.
After Renfrow got into Jaco’s car, which was parked at a carwash, he shot Jaco in the chest from close range. The bullet deflected off Jaco’s sternum and did not kill him. Refrow took the pot and left.
“This is a tragic example of a young person thinking it would be harmless to engage in the sale of marijuana,” Weir said Friday in a news release. “Unfortunately, the purchase, sale and use of marijuana is a steady theme that runs through a large number of cases filed with our office. People must remember that the personal sale of marijuana is illegal, and can be deadly.”
