A 4-year-old boy fell from the window of a moving Denver International Airport shuttle bus traveling at up to 40 mph Sunday in Aurora.

The child was injured but not seriously hurt, according to an Aurora Police Department release.

The accident happened at about 9 a.m. when the RTD bus was on the northbound Airport Boulevard off ramp from Interstate 70.

The boy’s mother, Brittany Gum, 25, was sitting in the aisle seat of the bus with her 2-year-old daughter on her lap, according to the release.

Gum had told the boy, who was in the window seat beside her, to “sit down in his chair and stop playing with the window” several times, the release said. “Next thing she knew, the window swung open and he fell out onto the roadway. Witnesses on the bus also gave similar statements.”

The driver of a vehicle that was trailing the bus told police that she saw the child “fall to the ground, roll several times, get up and start running away,” the release said.

The boy, who was taken to Children’s Hospital, was conscious at the scene, crying and transported immediately. He will be treated, observed for several hours and be released, the release said.

An on-scene traffic officer and RTD officials inspected the window and found the latch worked properly. There are no passenger restraints in the bus.

Aurora police are investigating the accident. At this time, police are not pursuing any charges against Gum.
