It was October of 2013, the United States was in the middle of a government shutdown and stopped into Denver’s Uneven Studio to record a Mile Marker session with Reverb before
At the time, Surfer Blood was touring in support of its sophomore album, “Pythons,” which it had released that summer. During our Mile Marker session, Surfer Blood recorded takes on “Blair Witch” and “Demon Dance” from “Pythons” and “Fast Jabroni” from its debut album “Astro Coast.”
Without much of the distortion and crunch of the band’s usual garage pop, the recordings reveal a cleaner Surfer Blood. Especially on “Demon Dance,” the band almost feels like indie-Americana rock. The harmonies in the chorus really pop, along with the band’s emotive and jangling guitar lines.
About two years after recording with us, Surfer Blood is releasing its third album, “1000 Palms,” on May 12. Listening to early singles from “1000 Palms” like “I Can’t Explain”, Surfer Blood seems to have captured some of this clean sound in the new material.
