Greeley police have arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of child abuse after his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son was found Monday afternoon unconscious and critically injured at the family’s trailer park home.

John Melvin White, of Greeley, is being held at the Weld County jail in lieu of $150,000 bail in the case, county court records show. He appeared before a judge Tuesday.

Officers were called to the home in the 200 block of North 35th Avenue at about 1:45 p.m. Monday on reports of a young boy who was not breathing and unresponsive.

Firefighters were trying to revive the child when police arrived, according to a news release. The boy was flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital Colorado with what authorities say were various injuries.

Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said White, who had recently moved into the home, was caring for the boy while his mother was at work when investigators believe the toddler was injured.

Tymkowych said the boy had visible injuries but none that would explain why he was unconscious and unresponsive.

Colorado Bureau of Investigation records show White has a criminal history dating to 2008 that includes arrests for domestic violence, criminal trespass and driving under the influence. In 2012, records show, he was arrested in Denver on suspicion of violating a protection order.

Police say their investigation into the alleged child abuse is ongoing.

Images from the home on Tuesday morning showed investigators outside of the trailer in an area draped off by yellow crime scene tape.

White is due back in court on Thursday for a formal filing of charges, records show.
