Visual Art

Through May 30 Regulars at David B. Smith Gallery downtown have seen Paul Jacobsen’s work before. He’s a painter with a particularly fine hand and a personal point of view on familiar subjects. His new body of work, on display until May 30, takes on the timely topic of marijuana. The series features portraits of cannabis plants rendered with all the finesse of 17th-century Dutch still lifes. Jacobsen captured their images at his cabin in Rico, and painted them in bright light and great detail, re-creating every curly leaf and puffy bud on his canvas. There’s something salacious in it all for pot users, but this is a serious treatment of a subject that’s rarely been explored with such deliberation. David B.
