This should be a no-brainer. A coalition of senators spanning the political spectrum, including Sens. Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner of Colorado, is proposing to exempt exotic strains of marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act in order to assist kids and adults suffering from epilepsy.

These strains have a THC content so low that they cannot be abused to get high. Nor would a 5-year-old afflicted with frightening grand mal seizures have any interest in doing so. What that child wants — and a growing number of seizure-prone patients, young and old, claim to have discovered with the cannabidiol from these plants — is relief.

The bill would allow patients access to the medicine across the country. In Colorado, of course, they can already get the treatment, although without the federal government’s blessing.

“Colorado has become a haven for people in need and parents desperate to pursue treatment for their children,” said Gardner. There is no reason such people shouldn’t find relief in every state.
