A toddler at the center of a child abuse investigation in Greeley has died.

The 2-year-old boy was found Monday afternoon unconscious and critically injured at his family’s Greeley home.

Michael Lara was taken to the North Colorado Medical Center and then flown to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora. He died of his injuries early Wednesday, according to a Greeley Police Department media release.

John Melvin White, 33, was arrested Monday on suspicion of child abuse. White is the boyfriend of Lara’s mother and was living with them in a trailer home in the 200 block of North 35th Avenue, Greeley.

He was caring for the child while the boy’s mother was at work.

An investigation is ongoing and the Weld County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case and will decide whether additional charges will be filed.

White remains in the Weld County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bond.

Colorado Bureau of Investigation records show White has a criminal history dating to 2008 that includes arrests for domestic violence, criminal trespass and driving under the influence. In 2012, records show, he was arrested in Denver on suspicion of violating a protection order.
