Rep. Diana DeGette opposes the Ratepayer Protection Act. (Craig F. Walker, Denver Post file)
Re: “Keeping electricity affordable,” May 9 letter to the editor.
How ironic. Just as The Denver Post is reporting that atmospheric concentrations of CO2 have reached the “daunting milestone” of 400 parts per million globally, letter-writer Terry Jarrett scolds Rep. Diana DeGette for not voting to opt out of the Clean Power Act. Jarrett uses the discredited argument that addressing climate change would be too costly, while completely disregarding the much greater cost of failure to reduce CO2 emissions. The most effective way for Colorado and the U.S. to reduce emissions, while stimulating the economy and creating jobs, is to institute a carbon fee with all of the revenue returned to American households.
Kudos to DeGette for opposing the regressive Ratepayer Protection Act. Letap encourage her and Sens. Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner to support real protection for ratepayers: a fee on fossil fuels with all the funds returned to American households.
